Dog Pulled from Burning Home in Orangevale After 'Alert Citizen' Helps Fire Department

The following is a news release from the Sacramento Metro Fire District:

An Alert Citizen Warns Neighbor of a Building House Fire.

Just after 2 a.m. [Friday] morning an alert citizen preparing for work noticed a fire developing at his neighbors’ home.  The residents were sleeping and only learned of the fire from the concerned citizen.  911 was called and Firefighters from Metro Fire were dispatched for a report of a house in the 9400 block of Bullion Way in Orangevale.

On arrival, crews from Metro Fire reported a working garage fire with an exposure home being threatened by advancing flames.  Additional fire crews confirmed and reported to the Incident Commander that the residents from both homes had exited the structures.  Firefighters went to work to protect contents on the interior of both homes and initiated an aggressive attack to limit the growth of this fire.

It was learned that the family dog was missing and firefighters began a search for the animal.  The dog was found unresponsive and crews began life saving care using equipment from their “pet mask kit” which was a program launched by Metro Fire in June of this year.  The crew from Medic 32 transported the animal to the local VCA Hospital and on arrival the pet was alert and standing on her own.

At the time of this release, the Investigations Unit from Metro Fire was on the scene looking into the possible cause of the fire which early reports suggest began in the area of the garage of the primary home.  Two cars were damaged at this residence along with a portion of the home, but over $200,000 in potential loss was spared.  Residents escaped without injury.

The exposure home suffered eave and attic damage, but over $250,000 in potential loss was spared on this residence and all occupants got out safely.

No firefighters were injured as a result of this incident and we are awaiting further information on the condition of the family dog.  Progress reports will be updated on Twitter by following @MetroFirePIO
