Smoldering Fireplace Sparks $150K Blaze in Orangevale

The fire in the 7100 block of Hazel Avenue was reported just after 1 p.m., fire officials said.

Smoldering ashes in an unattended fireplace sparked a blaze that caused $150,000 damage to an Orangevale home Wednesday but no injuries were reported.

The fire in the 7100 block of Hazel Avenue was reported just after 1 p.m., fire officials said.

Arriving firefighters saw heavy smoke coming from the home, the flames for the most part having been doused by the resident using a garden hose, Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District information officer Rashawn Fulcher wrote in a news release.

Firefighters cleared the home of smoke and checked for extension into the attic, as well as hotspots, Fulcher said.

I agree. This is getting totally out of hand. They dig through our apartment's trash, not caring ifRead More they scatter the garbage all over the ground. They have no care in the world except for the items that can give them money. What I think is almost as bad as the dumpster divers are the people that steal shopping carts because they either don't have a car or are too lazy to carry two or three shopping bags themselves. Not sure about them breaking into storage, but I have seen a spike in criminal activity in this city. Near my apartment, we had two shootings this month...or was it the end of April? In any case, they were a week apart. Both drive-by shootings. Nobody was hit, but it's making me uneasy. I realize I don't live in the best part of Citrus Heights, but the gang activity has really taken off lately.
