Just 12 Percent of Citrus Heights Students Ready for College, Based On Scores

Bella Vista ranks above average among California high schools, while Mesa Verde and San Juan fall below state goals, according to a new report.

Is it possible that just 12 percent of seniors at Citrus Heights high schools are ready for college? That's what a new report suggests.

Mesa Verde and San Juan high schools fell below California state academic goals in AP testing and the Academic Performance Index, according to the report. Neither school was ranked on the list of the Best High Schools in California for 2012, as announced Tuesday by US News and World Report magazine.

The two schools scored close to 12 in the college readiness index, based in part on AP test scores.

Bella Vista High School led the San Juan Unified School District, ranked No. 221 in the state. Thirty percent of Bella Vista seniors passed the AP test. The school also scored well in the state's academic performance index.

A three-step process determines the news magazine's Best High Schools ranking. The first two steps ensured that the schools serve all of their students well, using performance on state proficiency tests as the benchmarks. For those schools that made it past the first two steps, a third step assessed the degree to which schools prepare students for college-level work.
